Scholarship Opportunities

William J. Hodge Jr.

The Mr. William J. Hodge Trust has established a scholarship program for students graduating from Houghton High School. The Houghton-Portage Township Schools Foundation will award a minimum of a one-time $4,000 scholarship to each recipient. The Foundation’s intention is that recipients use the scholarship to help pay for education costs at Michigan Technological University or an accredited college or university in Michigan. The successful recipient(s) will be nominated by their respective principal and/or school counselor(s) to the Foundation (who will make the final decision) and meet the below-referenced criteria.

APPLICATION (PDF)

Eligibility Criteria:

  • The student must graduate during the current academic year;

  • The student must be accepted for admission to a post-secondary institution (proof of acceptance required);

  • The student must be enrolled in the areas of business or economics;

  • The student must demonstrate engagement in school and/or community activities; and

  • The student must write a letter in support of their application.

GRIT Scholarship Award

A scholarship program for students graduating from Houghton High School. The Foundation will award up to four $2,500 scholarships to graduating seniors. This scholarship is a one-time award. The Foundation's intention is that recipients use the scholarship to help pay for education costs at a post-secondary school of their choosing. The successful recipients will be nominated by their respective principal and/or school counselor(s) to the Foundation (who will make the final decision) and meet the below-referenced criteria.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • The student must graduate during the current academic year;

  • The student must have at least a 2.5 GPA;

  • The student must provide proof of acceptance for admission to a post-secondary institution

  • The student must demonstrate the qualities of "GRIT" (see attached grid);

  • The student must demonstrate engagement in school and/or community activities

  • The student must write a cover letter and accompanying essay in support of their application.
